Under promise, under pressure….

Under-promise and over-deliver. How many times have you heard that phrase? Chances are if you’ve been in coding business longer than a year, you’ve heard it at least once if not a dozen times.

As a web developer, we tend to have a wikipedia syndrome, yes I know we are all smart. We never be in the Coding Arena if you are not. A decent programmer has probably an IQ of 125. But sometimes, some of us tend to make over promises and we can do it all syndrome. Yes most probably you can do it and maybe you know someone can help you doing it. But what if???

It’s not the over-delivering part that is dangerous. Over-delivering and WOW-ing your client is good business. It increases client satisfaction, repeat business, and word of mouth which all leads to referrals. You can never add too much value for your clients.

It’s also not the commitment part that is trouble. You must make promises you can keep. This is common sense at it’s best.

A good programmer measure everything, his time, resources, environment and of course skills.

Promises You Intend To Keep
In order to commit with integrity, you must intend to keep your promise, make an under promise statement and you will have less pressure. This implies that you must believe the following:

1. You understand the project. If you don’t understand the conditions of satisfaction (including time), then you cannot expect to fulfill them. You are signing a contract that you haven’t read.

2. You have a robust plan. If your plan can be derailed by likely contingencies, then you cannot expect it to withstand their impact. You are hoping for the best, but not preparing for the worst.

3. You have the necessary skills and resources. If you don’t have the required skills and resources, then you cannot expect to finish the job. You are writing a fraudulent check with no funds in your account.

Tweeter Embed How tos

Starting in WordPress 3.4, WordPress added Twitter as an oEmbed provider. What this means is that you don’t need to install any plugins or configure any settings.

Simply go to Twitter and find the tweet that you want to embed. You need to get the URL of that status. When you click on the tweet, it will expand and show you several options. Click on the Details link. Just get the url something like this “https://twitter.com/applebyte/statuses/492639776319614976” and it will gives the result below.

Load Function of Jquery

I have encountered a bug on ie8, a css navigation to fadein once the flash was loaded. I have used the geturl function, the css navigation second level wasnt properly working.

Then, I google the on load function and other possibilities to load the navigation. Jquery have already load function that very useful. The load method is the simplest way to fetch data from the server.

Example 1: Load once the flash element was loaded or the whole html loaded.

$(document).ready(function(){
$(window).load( function () {
$('#myLoad').fadeTo(0, 1);
})
.end();
});

Example 2: As preloader

$(document).ready(function(){
$(window).load( function () {
$("#preloader").fadeOut(2000); THE PRELOADER
$("#image_container").fadeIn(3000); THE IMAGES
});
})
.end();
});

Web Directory WordPress plugin

codestuff
Finally, you can download the Web Directory WordPress plugin of Gerry. Come to think of it… He never told me it was already available.

From Gerry Snippet
“Create a web directory for your WordPress blog using the bookmarks stored in your WordPress web site. Maintain the bookmarks using the same WordPress Link manager built-in feature. You can use your own stylesheet to blend it into your blog. Just create a WordPress page and use short codes to incorporate the web directory. Or create a template page and use the theme API’s to create a customized web directory page.”

You can now download it from from its WordPress.org page

If you have questions on using the Web Directory WordPress plugin, just use the Code Stuff contact page or post a comment at the Web Directory WordPress plugin project page.

Rest In Peace IE6

I joining the campaign of RIPIE6 the obituary notice of Internet Explorer 6’s death.

As quoted “We, developers, know that Internet Explorer 6 was born dead. But there are people out there who don’t realize that. And we, my friends, beg to inform those deluded men that IE6 has passed out. They probably think they don’t need to know that. However, we as web developers of 21st century DO NEED THEM TO KNOW THAT.”

Yes please join us and be part of our petition.

Web Directory for WordPress

My husband spent 10 hours each day working on this web directory for WordPress and he is so excited to release it. Here are some of feature of his Web Directory Plugin for WordPress .
-Add/Edit/Delete directory entries using the current bookmark management functions existing in WordPress
-Easy setup of a main Web directory page by just using a single WordPress shortcode in a page you create in WordPress
-Easy integration into WordPress themes by detecting and using defined theme stylesheets
-Use of pretty permalinks in the Web directory structure to provide better search engine indexing and optimization
-Automatic creation of search engine friendly titles and description meta tags when web directory categories are accessed

Some of the planned features for the Web directory plugin are:
-Support for sub-categories – although the current WordPress core tables already support the creation of parent-child sub category relationships, there are no core functions for doing this.
-Backup / restore of categories/bookmarks – I’m also thinking of creating a Firefox plugin to be able to sync my bookmarks.
-Bookmark submission – to be able to allow your blog reader to submit url’s for inclusion into the web directory
-Some WordPress shortcodes to handle automatic link formatting in posts and other pages

Which reminded me, that he also spent the same huge amount of time developing the Joomla Map interphase and Classified Ads of Ortigas.com, you can find some of his projects here.

Well my trick to lured him out of computer… Heroes, House MD, Movie and knic knacks (potato chips, chocolates, etc.) ! I been successful for a while but then again after the movie he will go back again to his mistress (that his laptop). Mannnnn…. gosh!

It will be Google Wave Communication Era

During the Google I/O keynotes, the Google teams introduced the brand new way of communication, the Google Wave.

Google Wave is a preparation to HTML 5 standard and next phase of web interaction such as 3d games, movies, blogs, messaging, map, gallery and other browser plugins. Imagine your email collide with instant messaging on the web.

Google Wave was developed in Australia by Lars, Rasmussen and Hannon.
